On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, the Senate Finance & Appropriations Committee advanced SB (14) which would authorize all counties and cities to impose an additional local sales and use tax at a rate not to exceed one percent with the revenue used only for capital projects for the construction or renovation of schools if such levy is approved in a voter referendum. Under current law, only Charlotte, Gloucester, Halifax, Henry, Mecklenburg, Northampton, Patrick, and Pittsylvania Counties and the City of Danville are authorized to impose such a tax. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Jeremy McPike (D- Prince William), reported from the committee by a vote of 10-4.
The local option for a 1% sales tax for school construction approved by voter referendum, is one of VSBA's biggest legislative priorities for the 2024 session. Please contact your Senator and urge them to support SB 14!
