Recently, the
United States Department of Education made changes in eligibility requirements
for the Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP) – specifically for the Rural
and Low-Income Schools component of REAP – that could result in a loss of
funding for approximately 800 rural schools. The REAP program currently
provides $185.8 million to rural school districts.
The National
School Boards Association is requesting state associations to urge their
Senators to sign onto a bipartisan “Dear Colleague” letter being circulated by
Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) urging the US Department
of Education to prevent the funding cuts from taking effect.
Please
contact Senator Mark Warner and Senator Tim Kaine and ask them to join their Senate colleagues as co-signers of this letter to Secretary of Education DeVos.
